Buckeye Union High School District Responds to ABC15 Report on Superintendent Compensation
Buckeye, AZ – Buckeye Union High School District (BUHSD) is committed to transparency in all areas of operation, including compensation practices for district leadership. Following a recent ABC15 report examining superintendent contracts statewide, BUHSD would like to provide additional context and clarification regarding Superintendent Dr. Steve Bebee’s contract.
Dr. Bebee and BUHSD have consistently prioritized transparency, ensuring that superintendent compensation remains both fair and reflective of the district’s needs while maintaining fiscal responsibility to taxpayers. According to the ABC15 statewide analysis, BUHSD ranks 31st in superintendent salary packages across Arizona, which underscores the district’s due diligence in responsibly balancing competitive compensation with stewardship of public resources.
The report highlighted Dr. Bebee’s $1,300 monthly transportation allowance. This provision was not newly created for Dr. Bebee but was carried over from the previous superintendent’s contract. Given BUHSD’s location in the far West Valley, Dr. Bebee frequently travels 30 minutes to over an hour to attend district events, school activities, and regional or state-level meetings. The governing board determined that a fixed monthly allowance was a more efficient and cost-effective approach than processing mileage reimbursements for extensive travel.
This arrangement is not an added perk, but rather a practical solution to support the superintendent’s responsibilities and presence across the district and beyond.
BUHSD remains steadfast in its mission to provide exceptional educational opportunities for its students while ensuring accountability and transparency in its operations. The district values the trust of the Buckeye community and will continue to share information openly as part of its ongoing commitment to integrity and responsible governance.
